How to Dog Potty Train Your Dog

Tips forHow to Dog Potty Train Your Dog

One of the most common questions that any new pet owner has is how to potty train your dog.  Potty training is a lot like any other type of training for an animal.  The absolute best way of getting the behavior you want, which is having your dog relieve themselves outside, is to use lots of praise and positive reinforcement.

It doesn't matter if you want to do dachshund puppy potty training or a Saint Bernard Puppy house training, it takes effort and consistency on your part!

Threatening, yelling, raising your voice, getting aggravated or physical with your puppy or dog will not nearly be as effective as associative training followed up with lots love praise and positive experience for your pet.  The way this is done is to associate going outside with your attention and pleasing you.

This means that if your dog potties on accident around your home and you do not see it while it's happening, you cannot scold or say anything negative to your dog.  It's actually better, if you find a dog potty accient that was done earlier when you weren't looking not to say anything at all to your puppy.  The reason for this is that you don't want to interact with the animal after finding something that you don't like.

Another thing you need to do is face the fact that dog potty accients will occasionally happen during the training period.  It's just a fact of life that there will be times when your dog or puppy just will not be able to keep control of the bowels or bladder and simply go without warning.

If you catch them in the very act, or all you need to do is pick them up say firmly "NO" and take them outside and let them finish relieving themselves.  If while outside, they do indeed go potty,  it's important that you focus on that positive in heap praise on your pet for doing their business outside.

While cleaning up the mess inside your home, remember not to say anything to your pet.  The canine animal has a very social work attention span, especially when it comes to associating an action and a reaction.  This means going back into your house and cleaning up the pile of poo while yelling at your dog will do absolutely no good and may cause problems with your training goals.

It's only through patience and understanding that you can successfully potty train your dog.  Although it doesn't take a lot of time, it's important that you stay consistent with your training and realize that accients will unfortunately happen.

One last thought is about the age at which you can start to successfully house train your dog.  Puppies under the age of about three months cannot be expected to be able to consistently control their bowels and bladder.  While it's a good idea to start housebreaking as soon as possible, just remember that the accidents will happen especially during those early weeks.
