• Not watching your dog while in the house. It's critical that you keep a keen eye on your pet while in your home until they are completely housebroken. A dog can find a good spot, squat and go all in about 5 seconds. Consider the 5 second rule as the length of time you can have when NOT watching your pup. Once your dog is well trained, it won't be necessary to be so attentive but for the first few weeks or months, it's important that if you cannot watch your pet, they need to be outside or in their crate.

• Letting your pet sleep with you. This is one of the more difficult pointers because new puppies are so cute, needy, cuddly and wonderful. Don't make the mistake of allowing your dog into your bed. It makes them needful and can complicate your life in ways you cannot yet imagine. If you think house training can be a challenge, breaking an adult dogs habit of sleeping with you can be very traumatic for both you and the dog.

While it may seem like a good idea when your pup is small, imagine a full sized dog demanding or at least expecting to sleep in your bed for the next 10-15 years. Just the personal relationship problems this could cause with other humans should be enough to steer you away from this waiting disaster.

A better idea is to have a sleeping area next to your bed that your dog can call their own. Good putty training methods are based on good training principles. When they're puppies, you can use a portable dog crate or carrier to confine her to a small area. It your puppies a whiner or crier, you may want to get a heating pad and place it in one corner of their crate.
