Ever see a dog that urinates all over the floor and themselves when someone comes into the home?

How about seeing a pet get very excited to see someone then urinates or leaves drops of pee all around the area. This type of excitement urination is seen in many breeds. This type of problem seems to be very common with Cocker Spaniels and smaller dogs.

The problem, if it can be called that is known
"submissive urination." It's NOT a housebreaking problem per se. Housebreaking techniques are not effective on this type of behvioral problem

The reason is that submissive urination is an action tied to being submissive or a fear reaction that's uncontrollable. So forget any ideas of punishing your pet or scolding her.

The cause is when dog gets nervous around a more dominant dog, some will urinate as a sign of submission. This is part of the rolling over and exposing their belly signalling that they "give up." This shouldn't be confused with your dog simply enjoying having their belly scratched.

Punishing a dog with this kind of problem actually can re enforce the submissive behavior and the urination will continue.

Handling this type of housebreaking problem is more a factor of lowering the excitement factor. Try to come into the home with less noise and be very low key when you greet her. Another idea that has shown success is not even to acknowledge your pet for about 15-30 minutes after you come home. This allows them to relax about the situation and lowers the chance of peeing all over.

If the urination happens or your pup turns over exposing their belly, simply walk away. Don't acknowledge or pet them while in this postiion as it re enforces the behavior. The last thing you want to do is reward her sibmission. Eventually, your dog will learn that she doesn't get attention by being submissive and the urination will also get under control.

In all your interactions, if your doggie is prone to urination, try to keep the level of excitement down at least inside your home. This is a longer term problem but can be corrected with patience and praise.

Housebreaking puppy or dogs takes time and patience but isn't difficult if done right. It takes even a longer time to correct problems especially ones that are caused by the dogs people.
