While herding cats can be difficult house training puppies doesn't have to be. House training your dog is actually very simple though it does take commitment and effort on your part. So in the interest of explaining some of the more important details in house training puppies, here is a list of tips and strategies. While housetraining puppies may seem like a daunting task, it's actually one of the most important times you can spend with your pet. It is literally a time of bonding and growing together that will last a lifetime. Housetraining however is much more than spreading out newspapers and letting your puppy "go" wherever as long as it's on paper. This is a recipe for disaster. By following the tips below, you can limit the house pee and poop accidents while training your pup. While it may take several weeks for some breeds, others it seems need more time. The key is not to give up house training until your new puppy knows not only WHERE to go but how to get you to take them there. So to begin this exciting time in you and your puppies life, you need follow these few simple rules. 1. Your puppy must never be left alone and unsupervised while in your home. I'm assuming you're crate training which happens to be the absolute best way to house train your puppy or even an adult dog. So when your pup is out of his crate, you need to have your eyes on them at all times. If you want them close to you and don't want them in their crate, put your puppy on a leash and keep him with you that way. Just remember, accidents happen because you aren't watching. 2. You need to go outside with your pet for all bathroom duties. It's a good idea to have them on a leash and take them to the same place in the yard. This will teach them to "go" in a specific area instead of all over outside. Going outside also helps your pup to stay focused. He's not as worried about what you're doing or where you are if you're right there with him. It also allows you to give him lots of praise and love when he does his bathroom business where you want him to do it. (OUTSIDE!)
3. Stay on a schedule. Just like a human baby, keeping you pet on a food and drink schedule will help you control accidents. Knowing when they eat and drink allows you to also estimate when they need to go outside for bathroom duties.
These are just the big rules of successfully house training puppies. They also are the basis for crate training which has been shown to be successful in almost all situations. The key then is to be consistent and close with your puppy during this very important training time. Of course, all this assumes you have already have taken care of your dog health care, visited the vet and your pet is healthy. Sick animals cannot be expected to learn anything until they feel better. It's only through your persistence can your pet learn to understand what you expect and what makes you happy, In time, your housetrained puppy will not only know where to go to relieve himself but will be palling around with you for years. A well trained dog by your side is one of the most satisfying friendships you will ever have with anyone.
