While finding a wet dog crate can be a symptom of a serious problem, more likely it's the result of bad scheduling. There are several reasons why a dog or puppy would pee in their crate. Crate wetting is usually a symptom of a problem that's easily correctable. It's important then that before you decide that your pup is "out to get you" or is simply an incontinent dog, check out these possible things that could cause the problem.. 1. The schedule was wrong. 2. Submissive urination Dogs pee not only in their crates but sitting right next to you because of excitement. Submissive urination is caused by your pet being so excited that they lose control a little. Ever laugh so hard you pee yourself? Same thing happens with animals. This is usually found when you first come home or give your puppy attention. While there are several options to deal with this problem, you may initially not show any attention to your dog until they settle down. Only then acknowledge them and show affection. This gives them some time to adjust to the excitement of you being back. 3. Medical Problems. Dog crate wetting can sometimes be traced to a medical problem like a urinary tract infection. Take special care to notice if the peeing problem is new or an ongoing issue. Watch and see if your pet urinates normally. Does she seem uncomfortable or in pain when she goes? Is the frequency of having to go to the bathroom much more than normal? Any indication should be considered a potential medical problem and checked by your vet. 4. Old Age. There's a reason why there's a market for Depends© and other adult diapers. As we age, we lose some bladder control ability. This is especially true at night. Senior dogs have the same problems. You can recognize this as they leak pee or seep urine as they're resting. If you have an old dog, chances are that you have long given up the crate for having them just be close by your side. So while there's not the problem of a wet crate, there is the problem of leakage.
Frankly, I've lived with an incontinent dog for several years and now that he's gone, I realize cleaning up the mess was a small price to pay for just having him around. While it was time to put Willie down, making that decision is never easy. His incontinence while sleeping however became the least of his other problems that made his life painful. Anyway, the point to remember is that finding your dog has wet in the dog crate is not the end of the world. Do a little research and you will probably find that a simple adjustment to your dogs routine or diet will put a stop to the pee problem. Even many urinary tract infections can be limited or controlled with a different food. Dogs don't pee where they sleep on purpose but for a reason. It's our job to figure out what's the problem and correct it. Hey!--- Have you signed up for the FREE Pet Cratetraining course? Although your vet may be able to help, chances are that this is something you may have to live with. One of the better alternatives is to have washable pads where your favourite pet can rest. They also make disposable pads that can also be used.
