| Step 1 BEFORE you can Begin Crate Training an Adult Dog |
|
Emotions must have ran high when you thought about getting a pet but you're now faced with crate training an adult dog and maybe are more than a little worried. Fact is, crate training for an older dog is much more of a challenge and takes a little more effort but IT CAN BE DONE While we prefer to see well behaved dogs walking nicely beside their owner we never stop to think how much effort went into teaching correct leash behavior. Maybe the idea of having a companion to spend time with everywhere including the house was your thought when getting your canine friend. Still, friends do not pee on the expensive carpet in the house. It's time to take control of the situation and begin crate training for your animal. If your pet has been an outdoor animal for his recent life, it's time to let them explore the house. The one thing you don't want to do here is to allow them the run of the house. This is especially true of adult male dogs who have not been neutered. They WILL mark your home! House training is based on the idea that you are in control. Start by taking your pet ON A LEASH and allow them to visit inside the house. From there, you need to show them that they have a place inside and that's in the crate or confinement area. You may want to have him simply go into the crate area and lay down for awhile.
Once inside and after a few days, you want to bring your pet in ON THE LEASH and place them in the crate training area. The idea here is to teach your dog that if he's in the house, his place is in the crate. Teaching behaviors is not difficult if you remember that they need to be done step by step. Crate training dogs is no different that trying to teach your adult dog to site, stay or walk on a slack leash. All it takes is time, consistency and patience. To get to this point in your house training efforts may take a week or more. Your dog needs to become accustomed to being inside your home and comfortable with his crate area. This is the step that needs to be completed before crate training an adult dog can actually take place. Once you've arrived at this point in the training, it's possible to begin the house breaking routines that will deliver the success you desire. While this may seem like a lot of effort, it's the only way to be confident that your dog is completely house trained and reliable.

Who Else Wants to Extend The Life of Their Dog?
Many of us grow very attached to having our dog with us to share our life. The sad fact is that many of our animals die much younger than they should due to poor nutrition.
That right, POOR NUTRITION!
With the recent dog food scare, you would think we would wake up and realize we may be literally killing our pets with the junk food available at the supermarket and Wally-World. Although popular, those brand name products are designed for maximum profit for Purina and the others and NOT for the health of our pets.
Most commercial dog food is like our fast food, it's filling but not very good for us.
