Animal Training - house training a dog specifically is something almost every pet owner starts out with as a goal. What many don't realize however is that although it's not difficult, it DOES take time and you, as the dog owner need to be consistent while training.

One of the worst things people do when starting out trying to housetrain their pet is to allow bad habits to develop. It's much easier to properly train a puppy or adult dog BEFORE bad habits develop. To understand the concept of a housetrained animal, you need to realize the importance of the training method used.

There are two basic ways of housebreaking a canine. The first is to use piddle pads and encourage your pet to relieve themselves in a certain place in the room reserved just for that business. Many pet stores have these tags that can be used for just this purpose.

Some people use this method in place newspapers all over the floor were the puppy your dog should go to urinate and defecate. The thought process here is that as the animal becomes more accustomed to where they should go, you can make the newspaper area smaller and smaller.

The only problem with this method is that you also have to effectively taught your pet that it's okay to relieve themselves in your home. Whatever area you've identified as his personal bathroom will always be a weak point in their house training habits. You can expect that your pup will at least occasionally use that room for their own personal bathroom.

If you decide to use this type of house training method, be certain never to scold your pet for doing his business where you've taught him.

The other house training method is crate training. Crate training takes a little more effort on your part that has the benefit of having your pet completely reliable anywhere in your home. The crate training method is based on using your dogs natural desire to have a clean place to sleep and rest, away from where he pees and poops.

Crate training is based on the demand that when you cannot keep an eye on your puppy, he's confined in a crate or enclosed area where he will not have accidents. This also means however that housetraining dogs using this method requires you to consistently take them outside at regular intervals until they understand the behavior you wish them to follow.

Effective crate training means that you need an easy-to-use crate to confine your dog as they're learning what you want them to do. While there are many crate designs available, I personally prefer using one where I could easily place the dog into and get him out of the confined area.

While it's understandable, especially in areas that have a lot of snow or severe weather to consider indoor house training using newspapers are piddle pads, the long term problems of reliability must be considered. A correctly crate trained adult dog can be counted on not to relieve themselves anywhere in your home even when left for the day while the same cannot be said of a dog housetrained using the newspaper or indoor method.
