Housebreaking |
Housebreaking a Dog or Puppy is NOT hard! No matter if your pet is a new puppy or an older dog, housebreaking is not hard to accomplish. While it is time consuming for a few months, the benefits of having a dog you can trust inside your home is a source of immense pride in your own accomplishment. To housebreak a dog is an exercise in consistency and effort on your part not the animals. House breaking is more an effort to connect in your pets mind what you want to happen and making it an enjoyable experience. Dogs have little in the way of a logical though process. If your pet soiled the carpet in the bedroom even 10 minutes ago, attempting to use the mess as a learning experience for the pup is a waste of your time. They simply do not associate the soiling of the carpet with you being upset. There's to much of a time lag. If however, you catch your dog in the very act, it's possible to turn that situation into a learning experience by simply picking up your pet, taking them to the door, praising them for being at the door, then letting them outside to complete their business. Once they "go" outside, it's time again to praise them. When this is done, the next step for you is to thoroughly clean the soiled or wet spot on the carpet. Make certain you use specialty products to remove the odors and make it undesirable for your puppy or dog to think of that area as the bathroom. This is especially important because you want to start out right with puppy housebreaking.
To house break an older dog takes a bit more persistence and you probably need to correct some bad habits. Once again, the bad habits were yours and not the puppies or dogs. Realize that house breaking a pet is a step by step process. Puppies are usually easier to housebreak if only because their owner takes a more active interest in them. If you have an older dog and you've never developed that close friendly relationship, I encourage you to begin again. No dog sits around thinking about how they can annoy you. The behavior problems can be corrected and you will end up with a wonderful companion. With patience and encouragement, it's possible to remold your pet into the companion that you've always wanted.
