Can Housebreaking Dogs using Crate Training Work with an Older Dog?
The short answer to if it's possible to housebreak an older dog is absolutely yes. The problem however isn't that the dog is unable but that you, the owner need to recognize that your pet may have developed a number of bad behaviors that need to be unlearned BEFORE Rover can be effectively house trained.
A good example of this can be seen in the reason why the animal was made to stay outdoors in the first place. If you obtained your dog as a puppy and didn't have the time or use proper house training techniques, it's possible you thought they were simply unable to learn.
Another group of dog owners however are the ones that received their dog as an adolescent or adult dog from the pound, a friend or somewhere else. These are the people that through no fault of their own inherited the bad behaviors along with the dog.
Bad behaviors by the way can be seen in how the dog interacts with people, their manners and lastly where they go to the bathroom. Puppy potty training is much easier if only because puppies typically do not have the bad habits that need to be broken before you can trust your dog completely.
Housebreaking a dog takes more patience because of these issues.
Still, effective and successful house breaking comes down to two rules.
1. Consistent behavior on you, the owners part.
2. Limiting your dogs freedom while in your home using confinement in a dog crate.
You behavior includes the need to take your pet out on a regular schedule, watching them when they're out of the crate, looking for times to offer your pup loads of praise for doing what you want, etc.

Limiting dog freedom in the house is much easier. Crate training is based on the principle that your dog, being a pack animal, doesn't like to potty where they sleep and rest. This means that under mot circumstances, your pet will not go to the bathroom or urinate in the crate area.
So there you have it. It will take longer to undo the bad behaviors that may have developed over time but an adult dog can definitely be successfully house broken with patience from you and a sturdy crate. [smile]
