Housebreaking A Dog |
Housebreaking a Dog Can be Fun! Housebreaking any animal from an older dog to a new puppy can really give one a sense of accomplishment. Imagine having a companion pooch that has such good manners that you can trust them not only in your own home but that of friends and family. Depending on your dogs age, you can actually start housebreaking her as soon as she comes home with you. Be aware that little puppies are still a babies and don't have the muscle control yet to hold her business until about 10 weeks old. Puppies need to relieve themselves about 6-8 times a day. Keep watch for "I gotta go to the bathroom" actions like turning in circles or sniffing around and/or squatting. Older canines usually have bad habits that need corrected while learning new behaviors. Housebreaking problems can be corrected with patience. No matter the age, a good routine is to go outside immediately after a meal. Another good time is just before bedtime and when you and your pet first wake up. If you notice the dog drinking a lot of water, expect that needing to relieve herself will soon be happening. WATCH! The key to successful housebreaking your pup is consistency. Avoid having your dog urinate or defecate in the home. Of course, accidents will hapeen but these need to be few and far between. And WHEN it does happen, be certain to have some cleaner specially formulated to kill the odors and make the area unnattractive to your pet.
If your dog seems to go in a certain room, a good idea is to block off that room until he quits associating that area of your home with going to the bathroom. That's the secret of housebreaking a dog, break associations and learn new ones. If you don't do this, your pup will see this area as her new bathroom and problems might develop. A few weeks of careful work will result in a lifetime of good bathroom behavior from your dog. Hey!--- Have you signed up for the Pet Cratetraining course? Who Else Wants to Extend The Life of Their Dog? Many of us grow very attached to having our dog with us to share our life. The sad fact is that many of our animals die much younger than they should due to poor nutrition. That right, POOR NUTRITION! Although popular, those brand name products are designed for maximum profit for Purina and the others and NOT for the health of our pets. Most commercial dog food is like our fast food, it's filling but not very good for us.
