House Breaking Dogs the Right Way A quick check on the Internet will reveal many different ways that promise an easy or fast way of house breaking dogs. While it's true that there are several methods of housetraining, the fact is that many ways actually can create more problems than they solve. This isn't to say that you shouldn't try housebreaking your dog or puppy, rather, it's important to understand the end result and how each method works. The first, and oldest way to housebreak a dog is to put newspaper all over the floor where you want them to "go." While this might seem like a good idea, what are you really teaching your puppy to do? That's right! You're teaching him to go to the bathroom INSIDE your home. Are you certain this is something you want to do? Of course not. Fact is, a dog housetrained in this manner can develop the rather bad habit of peeing on newspaper. As in the Sunday paper you haven't read that sitting by your chair, the society page you have by the bathroom toilet and even that pile of old newspapers in the dining room corner. Successfully house breaking dogs takes a method that uses their basic instincts and desire to please you. That method is crate training. But before we check out this highly successful and popular method, let's look at another housetraining idea being sold on the web. Teach your dog to use a kitty box. There's so much wrong with this idea that it's hard to know where to begin. Not only does it have the same problems as paper training, but you have to deal with the problem of over spray. This is a problem especially if your dog is larger or a boy. Encouraging a boy dog to use a kitty box like product is an invitation to encouraging them to "mark their territory" in other places of your home. Crate training however is absolutely the best way of housebreaking dogs simply because it uses the natural instincts of your pet to help them understand what you want and just as importantly, where you want them to go.
By confining your pet, you limit the frustration of accidents in your home. This in turn, helps keep bathroom smells and odors out of the house and away from enticing your puppy. House breaking dogs in this manner is the preferred, time test method of many professionals and dog lovers alike.
