These are the things that people either accidentally or inadvertently do that sabotage their efforts to house train their pup. They're also usually the ones that will be posting in forums and complaining that they’re dog is to stubborn, nasty, or just plain stupid to be house trained.

If you're just starting out, one way to limit accidents is to use the tried and true crate training methods.

These methods have housetrained hundreds of thousands and maybe millions of dogs without the need to resort to these Dont's

Don't change a puppies schedule. Work to get your pup on a schedule and keep him on it. Wake up, eat, bathroom break, play time, sleep etc. Think human babies and puppies and realize they both do well on a regular schedule

Don't expect a very young pup under 12 weeks or so to be able to hold her urine for more than 2 hours. 8-10 wks=2 hours, 10-12 weeks=4 hours and extend from there. Remember that this means night time visits to the yard!

Don't show your frustration. Accidents happen and you need to realize that it's not his fault that he went in the house. You need to keep an eye on your puppy and recognize the signs that he needs to go out. A puppie can find a place, squat down and pee all in about 5 seconds. YOU need to keep you eyes on him at all times when he's roaming free.

Don't get aggravated with your pup during house training. If you take anything away from these tips remember that dogs are pack animals and like the companionship of people. Showing your displeasure because your puppy may interrupt your favorite television program will do more harm than you can imagine.

Don't forget to walk your pupie and if possible schedule it right after dinner. Walking after a meal is good for digestion. This in turn encourages your puppies system to be able to empty itself before bedtime.

Don't forget that dogs are not spiteful, nasty or out to get you. While some breeds, when they're older will attempt to try you on for size in an attempt to become the alpha dog of the pack, puppies are not by nature like that. Heck, even most adult aggressive dog breeds will not take on a human for dominance except in very few circumstances.

Don't try the old rub dog's nose in it idea. There's still people on forums and other places that recommend such stupid behavior. Be smarter than that and treat you dog with respect. Rubbing his nose in an accident teaches him to hide out of sight to relieve himself and be afraid of you. It also increases the likelihood of your pup contracting a disease from the elimination.

REMEMBER, most dog, bad behaviors
are developed because of owner bad behaviors.

Don't use different words for the same thing. Dogs can't read and only recognize a few words in relation to most humans. Using outside, going outside, potty, poop, out, outdoors, backyard, etc. all meaning the same thing can confuse your pet and make it more difficult to train the behavior you want. Using a single word command will result in better communication between you and your pet.

Don't forget to praise your dog and BE HAPPY each time he relieves himself outside. This means that you need to be outdoors waiting to give him lots of praise and attention. If you don't go outside, your puppy may rush his business and not finish everything that needs done. Then he'll come back into the house and you'll end up with an accident in the house --and it will be your fault.

By showing positive reactions to him doing what you want, like going to the door, or relieving himself outside you reinforce that behavior and will get more of it.

The last DON'T is to never ever hit your dog. That includes using a newspaper or your hands. A dog shouldn't duck when you come by.

Your puppy will learn better is you never use these housetraining tips. Dogs learn new behaviors with positive reinforcement. Nothing positive comes out of hitting your dog. So don't do it

By using positive reinforcement, you'll teach your dog how to please you which is a very important part of his life. Take the time to make training fun and you will be rewarded with a reliably housetrained companion dog for years to come House training puppies is not difficult but does take patience and consistency from you.
