House Training a Dog For Free Is Possible but...

While house training a dog for free is possible, it also makes it much more difficult on you, the pet owner. Like it or not, owning a pet comes with certain costs and expenses. Things like food and water bowls, a leash, license fees, a few toys and the occasional vet bill are all part of pet ownership.

House training however can be done at very low cost or almost free if you're willing to make your own crate. Crate training is absolutely the best way to housetrained a new puppy or older adult dog. You use a crate to confine your pet allowing them access to your home only when you can keep eye contact with them.

This in turn limits the potential for bathroom accidents. They you may think that an occasional potty accident is not that big of a deal but it's very serious from a dog training perspective. The problem is that any accident in the house leaves odor markers that your pet recognizes is the place to go to the bathroom.

A single accident, that isn't completely cleaned up can send mixed signals to your puppy when they are learning more you want them to relieve themselves. Remember that you're teaching a behavior and anything that can send a mixed signal needs to be dealt with as quickly as possible.

A free or very low cost pet odor remover blot up as much as possible then sprinkle baking soda on the area. The problem with this method is that it's not as effective as the enzyme odor remover's available at the store.

To have an effectively housetrained pet, you will next need a crate for training. Although there are many advocates for commercial carriers and cages to be used for crate training, there are other options.

Understand the crate training is based on confining your pet to limit their roaming throughout your house and possibly having accidents. Because you only want your puppy out playing when you're watching, anything that limits their freedom can be used in crate training.

The question always seems to come up whether House Training Male Dogs is harder than felmales? The easy answer is that NO they are definitely NOT harder to house train when they're still puppies. Once in adolescence, and they become sexually mature, male dogs will have a tendency to "mark territtory" which adds to the challenge of housetraining. Both males and females however, regardless of age can be successfully trained not to use your home as a toilet. Crate training is the way to gain this success and while it takes a few basic tools, it's essentially free.

One thing you may want to do right now is sign up for our completely free house training tips and course. It covers all the basic tips and training methods used by dog owners for years. And it's absolutely free with no strings attached.

Back to the tool you will need to get . . .

A crate for housebreaking however must be the right size. You want your puppy to have enough room to turn around and stretch out but not a lot of wide open spaces. A crate to large can result in your puppy going to the bathroom on one and using the other side of the crate for sleeping. So be aware that two large is not good.

Don't even consider blocking off part of the kitchen or bathroom to use as a makeshift crate training area. The issue of an appropriate sized crate is critical to the success of your house training efforts.

Our crates are available under $40 but you can make your own with some simple tools. Remember that a crate for training is to confine your pet to a small enough to area where they won't be inclined to relieve themselves.

Simply go down to the lumber yard or local hardware super store and pick up some plywood and a few nails. Plywood is available in 24 inch widths and can be cut for you. Simply have the store cut the plywood to size, say 18 inches by 24 inches. Have them cut 2 pieces each size and you have the crate almost complete. Simply nail the pieces together at the corners and you have a confinement area that's perfect for your dog.

Having a bottom or top is not necessarily important as the intention is to limit movement in your home. This can be done with the simple sides of plywood. So that is how you would go about house training a dog using free or low cost training tools.
