House Training Puppies - an Exercise in Fun

While the idea of house training puppies may seem difficult, it's actually a lot of fun. Many people have successfully completed house training two puppies at the same time without a lot of fuss.

When they're fully trained, you will no doubt have a lot of pride in having a pair (or more) of well potty trained yellow labs or other breed of dog. Imagine being able to leave not one but several dogs inside your home without worrying about potty accidents. With the right tips, tools and crate training techniques, you soon be the envy of your friends with a well behaved and trained pet.

If you want your puppies to be happy, you need to realize that they need to be able to spend time indoors with you. Most dogs prefer to enjoy interacting and being with their human family and not living alone outdoors.

Training puppies takes a lot of patience because their a lot of them and they are young. House training yellow lab puppies or any breed of pups can be very exciting but you need to be careful to know that each one does their business. It's very easy to lose track and on of the puppies will no doubt end up "forgetting" to go because of a leaf blowing in the wind or some other important distraction.

WHAT IS HOUSETRAINING? House training is teaching your puppy not to use your house as their personal bathroom.

Crate Training is simply a method of keeping control of your pet inside your home when you cannot be watching them. It is NOT storage of your puppy nor is it being cruel to your pet. So for good a house breaking experience, here are a few house training puppies suggestions that you will find important.

TIP #1 Don't rub their nose in it. Some stupid people have suggested that when an accident during house breaking happens, and they DO happen, you should rub your dogs nose in the mess. All this does is hurt your trust relationship with your pet and opens the possibility of a big vet bill because of the infection you can cause rubbing a sensitive nose in excrement. DON'T DO IT!

TIP#2 Take the time to learn your dogs behavior traits. All dogs, no matter what type have certain things they do before going to the bathroom. Maybe it's sniffing around the house or turning in circles a few times. Most will squat to pee. Getting to your puppy before they actually go, even if it's in mid squat, is the perfect time to re-enforce that the best place to go to the bathroom is outside.

This is done by immediately taking your dog to the door and giving them praise and exciting attention. Next, take them outside and wait for them to do their business. This gives you yet another chance to give them praise for going to the bathroom outside.

The key is to understand that by giving them praise, your dog associates going to the door then going outside to use pee and poop as pleasing you. So from a dogs perspective, we want to encourage this thought--

Please you = go outside to relieve themselves = GOOD = Praise

Puppy House Training is not difficult but care must be taken no to allow bad habits to creep into your schedule.

TIP#3 Speaking of consistency, use only one word to mean one thing. Don't use Bathroom one time, then potty the next. Your pet has enough trouble figuring out what you want without having you use different words that mean the same.

TIP#4 Watch your puppy or have them crated whenever they're not outside. Crate Training is based on you getting and keeping control of your pets actions while indoors. This means that unless they're being supervised, they need to be confined to the safety of their crate.

Keeping your puppy under control means either watching her every minute or confining her in her cage. What you want to keep your puppy involved with what you're doing in the house but not allowing her to roam free is an important key to successful housetraining lab puppies.
