Toilet Training A Dog

Toilet Training a Dog the Easy Way

So you want to try toilet training a dog and house train your dog? If you're talking about teaching your pet NOT to use your carpets and furniture as his bathroom, you're in luck.

Housetraining is the BEHAVIOR that's learned by your dog. I.E. where to go to relieve himself. Crate training is the METHOD used to communicate and teach the behavior.

But first, you need to recognize the three essential housetraining points below and you will be off to a good start.

Point 1. Understanding dog nature means to understand their pack nature. These animals are by nature social and prefer to live as a group. The group is your family or other dogs with a pack leader at the top of the chain. The point to remember is that you cannot leave a dog alone without companionship and YOU need to be that pack leader. Through years of socialization, these animals have grown to need us for companionship as much as we need them.

Point 2. Canines prefer to rest in a den-like place that's both safe and secure. Using a crate for training uses this basic desire for a safe and clean resting place. It also is one of the key reasons why crate training is so effective when done right.

The fact that doggies of all types have a preference for den areas makes it much easier to house train your pet. The reason is that while he likes his own resting area, he also doesn't like it soiled. This means that your best friend will not usually defecate or urinate in their own den area.

Point 3. Dogs comprehend your communication more through body language and voice inflection than the actual words themselves. So if you want your pet to understand words, it's important to use the same word to mean the same thing every time. Backyard, go potty, Bathroom, Bathroom break, Poop, Go outside, it's time to go outside to go to the bathroom but for your dog to understand, it's important to use ONE and ONLY ONE word of phrase to mean it.

  • Collar - A leather, chain, nylon, or cotton apparatus that fits around the dog's neck and is used for control.

  • Harness - A set of straps that fits around the dog's body, leaving no control over the head or neck. The harness is fine for small dogs and mild-mannered dogs, but should not be used on boisterous dogs or dogs that pull on the leash.
