Crate Training a doggie

Keys to Crate Training Dogs

Emotions run high when thinking about getting a pet but we never seem to consider the work involved with house training or crate training dogs. We prefer to see well behaved dogs walking nicely beside their owner and never stop to think how much effort went into teaching correct leash behavior.

The truth is that crate training dogs is not hard! It does take some time and you want to get on a schedule but it's not rocket science if you know what I mean.

Remember back when you wanted to get a dog. Maybe it was thoughts of companion or someone to keep you company or even you wanted to get a pet for the family. Whatever the reason, crate training probably didn't figure into the decision but it was more about all the positive things having a pet can bring to your and the family.

Thing is, house training is probably one of the most misunderstood behaviors if only because it takes time and you are aware when there is an accident! LOL. It's also one of the easiest things to teach a dog but is also arguably on of the most important as well.

Below is an important key to successfully crate training dogs. It doesn't matter if your pet is a Beagle, an Irish Setter, a Pug, a Bernese Mountain dog, a Portuguese water dog or even a Basset Hound, they all respond to the same basic key.

This doesn't mean however that all breeds will get with the program and be able to be potty trained in the same amount of time. No, house training is like anything else when dealing with a living animal, each individual is different. Heck, some Bassets have been know to quickly pick up the whole house breaking thing while others took an extra month or more to finally get it right.

The important FIRST key to successfully crate training dogs is CONSISTENCY. By putting your canine companion on a schedule, you can better control his behavior. It's better to safely confine your dog and use effective potty training methods than to end up with an unruly animal that cannot be trusted to keep your home urine and poop free. You cannot however not be consistent in your training and still expect the dog to understand.

Control in owning a pet is actually extremely important in enjoying a well behaved dog. It's simply not an option to allow the pup to have the run of your home and defecate anywhere they please because you are unwilling to use good housebreaking practices. If you aren't willing to adequately train your puppy, please don't get one!

The time it takes to learn and use effective crate training techniques is nothing compared to the enjoyment of having a dog that can be left reliably in your home without the worry of accidental urination on the expensive floor coverings. In the end, crate training dogs will result in the satisfaction of having a great pet for years to come.

Good habits are easier to establish than breaking bad habits. Have fun and teach your puppy what is expected and you will be rewarded with a wonderful friend for years to come.

When you've decided on a following through and begin Crate training a Doggie, you will find that your pet is better behaved and better companion once they understand what you want.

  • Harness - A set of straps that fits around the dog's body, leaving no control over the head or neck. The harness is fine for small dogs and mild-mannered dogs, but should not be used on boisterous dogs or dogs that pull on the leash.

  • Head collar or halter - An apparatus similar to a pony halter, the head collar works by controlling the dog's head, not pulling on his neck. A head collar is helpful for strong dogs, for dogs that are somewhat aggressive to other dogs, and for teaching dogs to focus on the handler.
