Crate Training A Dog |
What Crate Training a Dog is NOT Crate training is not a place to store your puppy or dog when you don't want to have him around. It's also not a punishment box It also not a place to keep your dog when you go to work all day. What Crate Training is....
Is a method of control to keep your pet confined to limit bathroom accidents. Crate training is a method to teach your dog that it's NOT ok to urinate or defecate in the house It IS a safe place where your doggie should enjoy to go for a rest from interacting with people. It is a miniature den or place where your canine companion can feel secure and where, except in a few very difficult situations, will NOT use it as a bathroom Crate training is a way to limit your puppy or dogs area of movement unless you're there to watch and interact with him. That way, when he needs to eliminate, you are there to catch him and begin associating going outside with positive re inforcement actions. See, dogs do nto want to soil their own bed or den. So this limits their going in the crate. Then, when you see him pacing or sniffing around or even squating, this is your que to take him directly to the door. Don't get dressed or tell him to wait, YOU must take action immediately. Once at the door, put him down, give him a pet and say good boy. THEN, open the door and let him out (or take him if necessary) and stay with him until he does his business. Once finished, give him loads of praise and make it a happy time. Be patient and do not rush him. Many people make the mistake of rushing the dog because they want to go back to the television or something. Big mistake! Many dogs are partially housebroken only because the human part of the duo was in to big a hurry and the dog wants to be with their owner. This is the same problem that develops when people take the dog out and leave them by themselves. Dogs want to be with their people and will rush the job and possibly not finish. Do not play with him so he can learn that this is for business and not play time. Take him out at regular times and control his access to the rest of the house using the crate. Crate training is a method that requires consistency of action. This is especially true when talking about puppy crate training. Puppies are babies and very immature. Dog crate training demands the same consistency but can be more difficult or easier than working with puppies depending on the animal. Use the same words at the same locations. Don't call it outside on time and backyard the next. Soon, your doggie friend will be going to the door themselves when they need to go out. Although accidents will happen, your consistency with crate training will be rewarded with a great member of the family that knows where they need to go when nature calls
