OMG! I Found Urine in my Dogs Crate

While finding urine in the dog crate may be disconcerting, it's not the end of the world. That's the main reason they call it an A-C-C-I-D-E-N-T-!

Still, if you've spent any time at all understanding the concept and strategies used to successfully house train your pet using crate training techniques, you know this isn't a good thing.

If you're working on crate training your pet, you no doubt realize how serious finding urine in your dogs crate can be. The basic concept of crate training is to limit the chances of your puppy or dog having accidents in the crate or anywhere in your home.

Although urine in the dog crate is a serious situation how you handle it will do more to decide if you will end up with a successfully housetrained pet or not. Here is a short list of steps in dealing with your puppy, the accident and the clean up.

1. Realize that it's called an accident because it IS an accident. That is, it's an accident from you're perspective not the dogs. All the dog knew was that she had a full bladder and had to pee. Finding no other place to go because they were confined to the crate, she did what was needed.

This type of accident may seem vindictive from your perspective but if so, you're actually giving the dog to much credit for their mental capabilities. While they may show displeasure by Crate Training Whining, they don't sit and think up ways to "get back" at you.

2. The dog is not happy about the pee in the dog crate. Dogs prefer a clean place to rest and sleep. By having the urine in the same crate that they live doesn't make them happy.

3. You CANNOT get angry at the animal for something that's YOUR FAULT! Remember that dogs are simple creatures. Read #1 above. They had to go and went because they had no other alternative! The great majority of times that accidents happen in the crate is due to not establishing and keeping to a sensible routine with your pets bathroom needs.
Giving your puppy a big drink of water and putting her in the crate to rest is a good way to have bathroom accidents.

4. So remember- if you didn't actually see or catch your pet in the act of relieving themselves in the crate or anywhere in your home, recognize that you weren't keeping a close enough eye on them. It's also good to remember that if you didn't actually see them then don't get angry or blame them either!

5. Clean up the crate. Simply blot up the wetness or pick up the little pile if that's what happened. Wipe the area with clear water and dry thouroughly.

6. Use an enzyme based chemical found online to rid the area of any traces of odor. This is important as dogs have a keen sense of smell and any odor residue can act as a magnet to let your dog recognize that place as "THE" place to go. So clean it up them use the enzyme to get rid of any left over smell.

So you deal with urine in the dog crate by simply cleaning it up completely. Next realize it's probably your fault for not keeping to a schedule. Lastly, remember that getting angry doesn't help. If you want to keep urine out of the dog crate, stay on the schedule and keep close watch on your puppy. Soon, your dog will have a good understanding of what you want them to do and more importantly. . . where. Urine in the dogs crate isn't the end of the world.
