Crate Training Problems

Crate Training Problems are more Challenges than Actual Problems

There are types of crate training problems that can make house training more difficult.  The great majority of these problems are more challenges that will take a little more time to overcome than actual deal killer problems

I would suggest that a deal killer problem is one that simply cannot be conquered.  Although I'm certain there may be a few of these types of troubles, I've yet to run into a situation where I couldn't re train a dog and get them reliably house broken.

Here are two major types of crate training problems that are very common.

  • These are the environmental problems caused by your puppies previous owners or breeder.  These problems are usually caused by a lack of care to maintain the puppies natural preference for a clean bed and sleep area.

These problems are caused by pet stores housing puppies in small cages where the animal goes to the bathroom in the same area as he eats and sleeps.  This is a recipe for disaster and causes difficulties for new owners because the dog doesn't understand what you want him to do.  Heck, he's always pooped in his cage and now you don't want him to do that!  What's a dog to do???

This is the same common problem caused by breeders who don't tend to nurture good bathroom behaviors of their new litters.  Forcing a dog to relieve themselves in the same area as they live, eat and rest is just asking for trouble.

  • The other big issue that's also very common especially with dogs from animal resue and shelters is violence.  These pets, although appearing to be very docile and friendly, may also harbor an innate fear of people due to previous beatings and abuse.

This is why it's absolutely necessary for you, a new or current pet owner to NEVER be aggressive or show anger toward your pet.  Crate training problems can be addressed with patience and a consistently positive attitude from you the owner.  It's only by a consistent pattern of encouragement and positive reinforcement can you communicate successfully with your dog.  Anything less than this will result in developing a fearful or aggressive/ defiant pet.

Using a Rolled Up Newspaper for Dog Training
While the whole idea of using a rolled up newspaper in dog training is a common myth, many well meaning people simply don't understand why they should NEVER hit their dog. After all, we spank our children and they seem to learn and not be damaged by it, right?

How to Stop Accidents in the Dog Crate
There are many reasons why your puppy may have had accidents in their dog crate. Crate training is part common sense and part behavioral science. If you ignore either part, the result is usually an accident in the crate.

Sooner or Later you will find Pee In The Dog Crate
It seems that no matter how hard we try, at one time or another we end up with pee in the dog crate when trying to housetrain our dog. While crate training accidents should be avoided, most of us will end up with at least one accident when crate training.

OMG! I Found Urine in my Dog Crate
While finding urine in the dog crate may be disconcerting, it's not the end of the world. That's the main reason they call it an A-C-C-I-D-E-N-T-!

Stop that Crate Training Whining Now!
Crate training and whining seem to go together when you first start housetraining. While all of us like to be thought of as nice and kind, the thought of allowing our pet to yap, bark, cry and whine while in the crate is more than some of us can stand.

Dog Crate Wetting Can be Serious!
While finding a wet dog crate can be a symptom of a serious problem, more likely it's the result of bad scheduling. There are several reasons why a dog or puppy would pee in their crate. Crate wetting is usually a symptom of a problem that's easily correctable.
Here is a short list of things to check.

  • The 2-Second Rule - Dogs have a 2-second association limit, and any verbal/physical corrections or praises/rewards are going to be associated with the activity at or immediately before (up to 2 seconds) the praise/correction is administered.

  • Reward - Anything the dog associates positively with that can be used as a motivating factor to induce desirable behavior or cause the dog to obey
