I would suggest that a deal killer problem is one that simply cannot be conquered. Although I'm certain there may be a few of these types of troubles, I've yet to run into a situation where I couldn't re train a dog and get them reliably house broken.

Here are two major types of crate training problems that are very common.

• These are the environmental problems caused by your puppies previous owners or breeder. These problems are usually caused by a lack of care to maintain the puppies natural preference for a clean bed and sleep area.

• These problems are caused by pet stores housing puppies in small cages where the animal goes to the bathroom in the same area as he eats and sleeps. This is a recipe for disaster and causes difficulties for new owners because the dog doesn't understand what you want him to do. Heck, he's always pooped in his cage and now you don't want him to do that! What's a dog to do???

  This is the same common problem caused by breeders who don't tend to nurture good bathroom behaviors of their new litters. Forcing a dog to relieve themselves in the same area as they live, eat and rest is just asking for trouble.

• The other big issue that's also very common especially with dogs from animal resue and shelters is violence. These pets, although appearing to be very docile and friendly, may also harbor an innate fear of people due to previous beatings and abuse.

This is why it's absolutely necessary for you, a new or current pet owner to NEVER be aggressive or show anger toward your pet. Crate training problems can be addressed with patience and a consistently positive attitude from you the owner. It's only by a consistent pattern of encouragement and positive reinforcement can you communicate successfully with your dog. Anything less than this will result in developing a fearful or aggressive/ defiant pet.
